A Health And Physical Education Instructor Teaches Her Pupils About The Importance Of Alcohol Addiction Signs

Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the best known private high school in the county. Although she had been teaching for only five years, she had already gained a reputation as a teacher with a teaching approach that motivated and stimulated her students to think and to learn.

For instance, one Monday afternoon she addressed the pupils in her class and said the following: "For the next three or four days we are going to learn about some basic alcoholism signs from a more wide-ranging viewpoint and we are also going to learn about some of the most highly researched signs of alcoholism from a more specific perspective."

"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will definitely confirm that a drinker with a drinking problem is a person who is alcohol dependent, but the more signs that a person displays, the stronger the probability that he or she is an individual who is addicted to alcohol."

Miss Jackson then told the class that each individual would be responsible for investigating two alcohol dependence signs and then presenting his or her findings to the other members in the class via a five minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were discussed and presented in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked the students in her classroom to study the list and rank the top seven alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After approximately fifteen minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and told her students that after she studies the results, she will discuss her findings the next school day.

Miss Jackson told her students to go over the numbers and then to raise their hand if they had any questions, issues, or concerns. Within a minute or two, just about everyone in the class raised his or her hand. It was apparent that the students had some concerns, issues, or questions about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. For instance, almost every person in the class disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism authorities, namely, "Do you feel extremely ill when you abstain from drinking?"

Miss Jackson then told the students in her class why this answer was the most clear-cut indicator of alcoholism. She stressed the fact that the major difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol addiction and not with alcohol abuse.

Essentially this means that when a person who is alcohol dependent suddenly stops drinking, he or she will go through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the individual who is addicted to alcohol, the pupils started to understand the essential difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

A few minutes later the bell rang, signifying the end of the class. Based on the enthusiasm displayed by the students when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson knew that she had encouraged and stimulated her students to stop and think about a significant health issue and social problem that exists in our culture.
