A Married Couple Becomes Uptight About Their Hazardous And Abusive Drinking And Ponders Whether They Manifest Any Signs Of Alcohol Addiction

Angie and Lenny have been married for seven years. They wanted to have some fun and excitement before they decided to have a family and so they with forethought created a very vibrant social life.

The essential problem, it needs to be underscored, is that virtually everything they do socially includes drinking. For example, all of the family get-togethers, parties with friends, dinner engagements, happy hours, and sporting events they attend have something to do with drinking.

If they were moderate drinkers this wouldn't be such a big problem. Because they drink quite abusively, however, they are starting to observe some unmistakable alcohol-related problems in their lives.

For example, just three days ago Lenny got a third DUI and has been calling off from work due to alcohol-related health issues. In addition, Lenny's last two or three performance appraisals at the office have been less than admirable and he has started to fail to recall what he does or says while he drinks. Finally, Lenny has been going through sleep-related problems and his family is starting to grow concerned about his drinking situation.

In a similar manner, Angie has been feeling down in the dumps with life and to deal with this, she has been drinking more than any time in the past eight months. Not only this, but Angie has been getting a lot of throbbing headaches and experiencing painful hangovers due to her drinking. Finally, Angie has been feeling significantly less energetic when she gets up in the morning, she has been getting to work late at least two days per week, and she has been receiving some negative criticism from her family members, relatives, friends, and coworkers about her excessive and abusive drinking.

One Friday evening while watching TV, Lenny and Angie flipped through the channels and found a fascinating documentary about alcohol facts and alcoholism facts in general and about the signs of alcoholism in particular. This television special was a real realization to Lenny and Angie because numerous alcohol facts that were gone over seemed like they were directly related to numerous alcohol related drinking problems Lenny and Angie had been going through.

With thoughts of the TV documentary still fresh in her mind, Angie asked Lenny if some of the alcoholism signs they have been exhibiting could be a signal that they are alcohol dependent or perhaps becoming alcohol dependent. Lenny didn't know the answer to Angie's question and so he suggested that they schedule an appointment with one of the therapists at the local alcohol rehab center to find out more about the gravity of their drinking issues.

Paradoxically, even though their drinking circumstances hadn't yet changed, it was apparent that Angie and Lenny were at least concentrating on their drinking problems, they were willing to find out more about their drinking situation, and they were interested in learning how they could significantly cut back on or eliminate the alcohol-related problems that had begun to emerge.

When Lenny and Angie went to bed that evening, they arrived at a decision that the next afternoon, Lenny would call and schedule an appointment for both of them at the alcohol treatment center located just East of the State Capital. After they promised one another that they would do whatever it takes to deal with the alcohol-related difficulties that had developed in their lives, they truly had the best night's sleep they could remember in the last five weeks.
