A Young Gentleman Needs Counseling For His Severe Depression, Relationship Issues, And For His Chemical Dependency
Approximately eight months ago I had lunch with a thirty-five-year-old man named Benjamin who experiences acute depression, has relationship problems, and who is alcohol and drug dependent. As stated by Benjamin, it is his drug and alcohol addiction and his extreme depression that has had the most to do with his constant relationship problems.
As articulated by Benjamin, he is so dejected by his relationship problems and by both of his medical problems that he basically has no motivation to accomplish much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin completed three semesters of graduate school in sports history.
Benjamin's situation makes me wonder if he is an example of a person who can look in the mirror and see his drinking problems and drug abuse and do something positive about these problems. Or, on the other hand, if he a person who has to hit the very bottom before he gets drug and alcohol treatment that leads to long-term recovery.
It may be asked how rehabilitation would help his alcohol and drug addiction. First of all, there are more than a few newly developed doctor-prescribed medications that can help Benjamin through the drug and alcohol detox process, through his withdrawal symptoms, and help him avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse. Second, in treatment he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the various stages of alcoholism.
Third, Benjamin would learn to acknowledge the fact that there is entirely nothing helpful about substance abuse and abusive and hazardous drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that involving himself in one or both of these unhealthy conditions is the path to poor work and school performance, a premature death, financial difficulties, deteriorating health, shattered relationships, and legal problems. Fourth, counseling for his relationship difficulties and his depression might help him cope with these medical conditions more effectively and perhaps create less of a need for him to involve himself in addictive behavior. And finally,in rehabilitation he could also learn more about the various symptoms of alcoholism that he has displayed.
Since Benjamin doesn't have the resolve to accomplish much of anything in his life, it is evident that he desperately needs some hope for a healthier life. And the sad thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the counseling he needs for his severe depression and addiction and adhere to his treatment protocol.
Benjamin is simply too young to be beaten in life. He doesn't understand this at this time in his life but if he can learn how to abstain from alcohol and drugs via drug and alcohol rehab and get the treatment he needs for his severe depression, he can turn his life around and begin living with direction, self-respect, and passion.
Better relationships, constructive change, self respect, and a wonderful life are certainly possibilities for Benjamin. But only if he can get motivated to get the medical rehabilitation he requires, follow through with his treatment regimen, live his life in a healthy and addiction-free manner, and learn how to develop a more positive attitude about his life.
